There’s No Such Thing as Shortcuts

Harper and dad

My sister-in-law came over for dinner on Monday, and as we were catching up, she shared a story about getting drywall done at her house.

She first got a bid from a professional company but then talked to an old friend who ran a part-time construction business on the side. When she asked if he could do the job, he said, “Yup!”—and at a lower price than the professionals.

Sweet! But you can probably guess where this story goes. The people he hired weren’t professionals. They didn’t act like professionals, and their work certainly didn’t reflect it.

Long story short, the job was a mess. The owner of the construction company had to come out and fix everything himself. In the end, he didn’t even charge her—it was that bad. But the stress and headaches? Probably not worth the “savings.”

The Illusion of Shortcuts in Health & Fitness

We’ve all done it—tried to cut corners to save time, money, or effort. But more often than not, shortcuts backfire. They lead to more stress, more problems, and usually, more expenses in the long run.

The health and fitness industry is one of the worst offenders. Every year, people spend roughly 60 times more on supplements, pills, and quick fixes than they do on actual exercise. And that doesn’t even include the billions insurance companies spend on weight-loss drugs like Ozempic.

Think about that. As a country, we spend $60 on “quick fixes” for every $1 we invest in actual health through movement and exercise.

Yet despite what commercials and social media influencers claim, there are no shortcuts when it comes to your health and fitness.

And often, the supposed “fixes” come with serious side effects.

Sure, taking a pill is easier than getting to the gym five days a week.
It’s easier than tracking your macros.
It’s easier than buying healthier food and meal prepping.
It’s easier than cutting back on alcohol or sweets.

But in the long run, it doesn’t work.

The Only Thing That Works? Movement.

I don’t blame anyone for looking for shortcuts. We’re constantly bombarded with messages pushing us toward quick fixes.

But here’s the truth: there’s no magic pill, no surgery, no shortcut that will do what consistent movement and training can.

Want to move better? Feel better? Live longer? Improve your mood? Build confidence? Look better?
Exercise is the answer.

It’s not complicated, but it is hard.
And you have to keep doing it—over and over.
