I’ve never been a big believer in New Year’s resolutions—at least, not in the traditional sense. Why wait until a specific day of the year to do something important? If it truly matters, you should start as soon as possible. That mindset has guided much of my life. But, if I’m being honest, I also haven’t been much of a goal setter in recent years. My excuse? “My goal is just to be happy and enjoy life.”

Sounds nice, right? But let’s face it: that’s an incredibly vague goal. It’s also an easy way to avoid taking real, purposeful steps toward anything meaningful.

Why Change and Goal Setting Feel So Hard

Change is hard. Setting goals takes effort. Figuring out the steps to achieve those goals? Even harder. And then there’s the real grind: doing the work over and over again to make those goals a reality.

But you know what might be the hardest part of all? Failing. That’s the one that’s held me back. The fear of putting in all that effort and still falling short. It’s such a tough pill to swallow that, for a while, I avoided setting goals altogether. It just seemed easier not to try than to risk failing.

Here’s the thing, though: failure is a part of life. It’s here to teach us something. Yes, it’s uncomfortable. Yes, most of us are scared of it. But failure isn’t something to fear. It’s something to learn from, to reflect on, and then to move past. And the truth is, having a community of like-minded people and solid systems in place can make all the difference when it comes to navigating those setbacks.

There’s No Perfect Time to Start

If you’re waiting for the perfect moment to start chasing a goal or getting in shape, I’m here to tell you: it doesn’t exist. Life is full of reasons to put things off. We’re busy, we’re tired, we’re uncertain. But here’s the harsh reality: every day you wait to start makes it harder to begin the next day. It’s called opportunity cost—and it adds up quickly.

When we avoid starting because we’re scared we might fail, or because the timing isn’t “right,” we’re forgetting something important: the cost of not starting is building with every passing day.
