How often do we find ourselves caught in the pursuit of perfection? Whether it’s in our fitness routines, our work, or even our daily conversations, we often feel the need to get everything just right. I know I spend a lot of time thinking things need to be perfect or close to it. If I’m going to work out, it has to be a full workout. If I’m going to say something, it needs to be 100% correct. If I’m going to put out a quickcast, a blog, or any kind of content, I want it to be the best I can put out.
The problem with this mindset is that it often leads to inaction. We become so fixated on doing things perfectly that we end up doing nothing at all. And inaction is the worst possible thing when it comes to progress. Being “healthy” or “fit” is more about action than perfection. It’s about verbs—doing things, taking steps, making moves. It’s about reps. Because the only way we get better, the only way we change our habits, the only way forward, the only way we make progress is through repetition.
And usually, those reps are pretty bad at the beginning. It sometimes takes years before they get better. But we can’t miss out on good, or even bad reps, chasing perfect. Don’t let the fear of not being perfect or even good keep you from attempting things. I’ll take a bad rep almost any day over no rep. Because we can learn from the bad rep. We can’t learn from no rep.
We intuitively know this, especially when it comes to raising our kids. We encourage them to try, to fail, and to try again. We understand that growth comes from these experiences. Yet, it’s funny how most of us forget this as we age. We no longer think it’s okay to try something new and not be good at it, or to struggle with it. But why would you be good at something you’ve never done before?
At CrossFit Formidable, we believe in the power of action over perfection. Our mission is to help you create sustainable lifestyles and lasting changes. It’s not about getting every workout perfect; it’s about showing up and putting in the reps. So next time you’re hesitating because you think you need to be perfect, remember: any reps are better than no reps. Take action, and progress will follow.
And if you need help taking action, or taking that first step, or making those bad reps better. Just reach out to us.
