Todd Gary

I have been doing CrossFit for 5 years. When I started I was 50 lbs over weight, on high blood pressure and cholesterol medications. Beat up and broken from 2 back surgeries, a few knee surgeries and very out of shape. I wasn’t able to hang from the bar let alone do a pull up. I struggled with running. Now I can do pull ups,  push ups, move heavy stuff and have ran several 5k’s, a 10k’ snowshoe race, multiple CrossFit competitions and Hood to Coast. I am no longer on medications. It has also helped me mentally look at the positive side of things working out daily helps me keep a clear outlook on life.

I can’t say enough about the coaching. They care about you, the workouts are always well thought out and the warm up and cool down always fit the workout. The Box is always clean,  they have the best equipment and limit the class size so athletes have the equipment they need and get the coaching they need. The people that I workout out with have seen me at my worst and my best. The whole community is very supportive. What I have been able to accomplish both physically and mentally has been because of the positive experience at CFF.

You don’t have to be in shape to do CrossFit. It is built around you as a athlete you control how you do the workout and what weights you will lift all you have to do is show up.  I started at 47 years old and 18% disabled now 5 yrs later I can do whatever I put my mind to. Don’t be afraid we all started somewhere.  At CFF you will find the most supportive group of people you have ever met. It will change your life the hardest part is walking in the door the first time.

I had a friend who was doing CrossFit and looking more and more amazing every week when I saw her- she kept telling me about her workouts and the community and suggested I give it a shot- she was convinced I would love it and she couldn’t have been more right.

I showed up for the foundations classes and each day I was sore but willing to keep trying because I liked the coaches and the idea of changing my lifestyle was intriguing. I just kept thinking “what if it works for me too”. My first class I was scared because I was not an athlete of this type, I am active and play softball and spend time outdoors but I have never even touched a barbell in my life. From the very first day the other ladies were so nice and encouraging and I understood what my friend was talking about when she said it was a community.

The first change that I saw in myself was mental. I have never been very confident or had a lot of self esteem and the stronger I got the more that changed. Suddenly my shoulders were back, my head was high and a new woman was emerging. There were many times when I would load a weight and coach Chip would say to me, I think you can go heavier- every time I doubted him, and every time he was right- I can’t tell you how uplifting it is to have someone who believes in you more than you believe in yourself and continues to support that until you do believe it yourself.

In February of this year I committed to the nutrition portion of the program after watching some of the athletes have weight loss success working with Katie. For me this is when the real change happened.

I’m down 23lbs and I am stronger than I have ever been in my life. My confidence is up and I am learning how to effectively fuel my body for maximum performance….. My coaches and my community are my best cheerleaders and I trust them. We all support each other inside and outside of the gym.

I also competed in a fundraising competition this year, not expecting to win but just to see if I could – and I did!

So for the girl who had never touched a barbell in her life to a girl who just recently hit a PR (personal record) in a deadlift of 185 the results are apparent.

Today I hear things from my friends like, you look amazing, what are you doing…my Marriage has improved and my husband teases me that he has a whole new wife- my daughter thinks I’m crazy but she sees how much more confident and happy I am, and is actually my biggest fan.

Out of a curiosity of “what if it works” to the woman I am becoming today I am eternally grateful to Crossfit Formidable. Thank you for changing my life.
